Take this ring, Master, for this is the Ring of Fire, and with it you may rekindle hearts in a world that grows chill. — Círdan the Shipwright (Tolkien’s Silmarillion)
I am not a wizard — not today, at any rate. I’m just a linguist. That doesn’t mean I don’t try to kindle what hearts I can with the tools I have.
I spend my workdays as a computational linguist deconstructing language patterns, and my evenings as a worldbuilder constructing small civilizations. Currently, I’m putting the final touches on two books:
- “Crown of Crows”—a feminist reimagining of portal fantasy where Susan-from-Narnia gets her rightful second chance
- “Axon, Inc.,” my near-future dive into what happens when Silicon Valley bro culture collides with actual mind-reading technology.
(Both of these books are available in serial form on my Patreon page.)
My fiction emerges from that strange neural intersection where technical linguistics expertise meets spiritual practice. It’s like I’ve built a three-legged stool of language science, Druid spirituality, and storytelling, then decided to sit on it while typing.
Home is Seattle, where I live with my wife Alison and our four black cats who, despite my expertise in communication systems, still haven’t revealed why they insist on walking across my keyboard during crucial writing sessions.
When not creating languages that will never be spoken or worlds that don’t exist (yet), I’m probably training in the ancient art of bujo.
